Falsework

falsework is a temporary structures used in construction to support a permanent structure until its construction is sufficiently advanced to support itself.  Falsework includes temporary support structures for formwork used to mold concrete in the construction of buildings, bridges, and elevated roadways.






TYPES OF FALSEWORK 
  • SHORBRACE SYSTEM: Shorbrace support system used widely to support the bridge deck. This system possesses many merits. One of these merits is simple and quick erection and dismantling of falsework. Also, it can be used to support heavy structure safely. This system consist of many components:

1.Shorbrace frame: these frames are the main component of falsework. It is connected with each other to form a tower of the desired height to support formwork as shown in the figure below.

2.Shorebrace telescopic frame: The function of this frame is to assist in maintaining the required height of falsework. This frame inserted inside the shorbrace frame then connected by load pin with the mainframe

3.Vertical frame connector: this will be used to connect shorbrace frame vertically

4.U head Jack: the soldier of formwork will place inside the U head jack. This u-head is adjustable and will contribute to providing an accurate profile of the casted slab.

5.Post head jack

6.Cross-bracing: this will brace adjacent shorebrace frames. The figure below shows the different components of falsework

  • Cup-lock supporting system: Cup-lock supporting system used widely in bridge and  build construction. This system required a small space for storage. The erection and dismantling of this system are simple and quick compared to other supporting systems. The component of cup-lock system is


    1.U and post head jack: these items are used similarly as in shorbrace supporting system



    2.Standard: standard height can vary from one to three meter

3.Spigot connector: spigot connector used to connect two standards in the event the height of standard not enough

 4.Ledgers: ledgers are connected to standard to increase the stiffness and minimize the deformation.

Rebar Splicing and Overlapping — ACI 318-19 Requirements Explained

Reinforcement splicing or overlapping is a fundamental requirement in reinforced concrete structures. Because reinforcement bars (rebars) are manufactured in limited standard lengths—typically 12 m —it becomes necessary to splice or overlap them to achieve the required continuity in structural members. The main purpose of a splice is to ensure smooth stress transfer between adjacent bars through the surrounding concrete. The overlap length, commonly known as the splice length , must be long enough to safely transfer the tensile stresses from steel to concrete without causing bond failure. It is recommended to avoid splicing in high-stress zones such as areas of maximum moment, and to stagger the splices to prevent congestion and reduce stress concentration. Pile cap used to transfer the loads from superstructure to the piling. The pile cap is thick concrete mat rests on piles. It is part of the foundation and used to distribute the loads over the piles. Piles used when the soil bearing is not enough to carry loads of the structure. Improper designing and installation of formwork for a concrete member can result in concrete Bulging. During the placing and compacting of concrete, forms may deflect largely in the weak areas. The deflection of forms will cause concrete to expand at this location, and this known as concrete Bulging. Concrete Bulging will spoil the appearance of a concrete member. Bridge Diaphragm

The main function of diaphragms is to provide a stiffening effect to deck slab in case bridge webs are not situated directly on top of bearings. why do we stagger reinforcement overlapping?

First, we should know that steel rebar comes in standard length such as 12m. using very long reinforcement is impractical because it will result in difficulties in handling reinforcement by steel fabricators. Also, longer rebar is heavier and difficult to lift and move. So for a long structure such as a slab, we require a reinforcement length that is more than the standard reinforcement. We can't use a single piece of rebar for a specific length for such a structure, so we use two or more steel rebars to cover the entire length of the structure. Pile cut-off level is usually similar or a little bit higher than the blinding level of a pile cap. the process of constructing a cast-in-situ pile involves the following steps: installation of the temporary casing to prevent the soil collapse during the drilling process and to guide the drilling rig.
